Marot, Clément
(1496-1544)
   poet
Born in Cahors, the son of the rhetorician Jean Marot, Clément Marot served as a page to King Francis I and then to the king's sister marguerite of valois, the future queen of Navarre. He earned their patronage and wrote court poems that followed the style of the period (D'Anne qui lui jeta de la neige, 1515; Temple de Cupido, 1515; Adolescence clémentine, 1532). Sympathetic to the Reformation and to john Calvin (whom he met in 1535), Marot was exiled for his beliefs and died alone in Turin. His other works, some of which were written in exile, include Épître à Lyon Jamet (1526); Épître au roi, pour le délivrer de prison (1527), a fierce allegorical satire on the judiciary; L'Enfer (composed in 1526, published in 1542); and Épigrammes (1527). He also edited a version of the Roman de la Rose (1526), an edition of the works of François villon (1533), and did a translation of the psalms (1536). Marot contributed to the literary development of the French language, and his picturesque, clear language inspired such later writers as nicolas BOILEAU and JEAN DE LA FONTAINE.
